Wondering what to do on the weekend? With the winter coming and the coronavirus lurking around, there is no better time to start a new TV show, is there? And if you ask me, the longer the better! To help you with choosing, I have ranked the best crime TV shows from the past decades – including some classic titles, as well as some modern series.
What is your favorite crime TV show?
Creator: David Chase
If there is a person who hasn’t watched the Sopranos, then definitely there isn’t a person who hasn’t heard about it – that’s how big this show is. The story is a tribute to the classic mafia movies but told in a very original way with dose of black humor, a lot of violence and most of all – emotion.
Creator : Noah Hawley
Who hasn’t heard about Fargo? Worry not, the Coens’ movie and the TV series have a little in common story-wise, except that they are both awesome. Quirky characters, bad situations and even worse decisions lead to a compelling story backed up by amazing acting and beautiful cinematography. This is definitely a must-see if you are a fan of dark comedy, crime and drama all at once.
Creators: Joe Penhall
Mind Hunter is one of the coolest crime TV shows in recent years. It is set in the 1970’s when a couple of FBI agents are developing (and actually pioneering) the behavioral profiling techniques by studying and interviewing psychopathic killers. It is a very innovative take on the well-known serial killer plots, both thrilling and exciting. The name behind the series is David Fincher and this means only one thing – classy! However, the show is now on hold and rumor has it that sadly there will not be a third season.
Creator: Alan Ball
Six feet under is a TV show set in a family-run funeral home. Yes, you’ve heard me right. Bizarre characters, surrealism and absurdity, life and death philosophy, politics, a lot of drama and a lot of heart are the perfect mix for something unforgettable. This is one of these shows that gets under your skin and stays with you for years.
Creator: Vince Gilligan
Yes, we cannot go any further without talking about the iconic Breaking Bad. What is the fuss about? The show tells the story of a chemistry teacher diagnosed with cancer and given only two years to live, who turns into a methamphetamine manufacturer and dealer in order to secure his family’s future. And if this is not a recipe for success, I don’t know what is. The show is tense, dramatic, humorous and much more – holding quite high ratings in Imdb and still loved by old and new fans even years after the finale.
Creator: Nic Pizzolatto
The first season of True Detective was HBO’s most-watched show in its first year of airing, and although the other seasons were not so well received, this TV series remains one of the most compelling crime shows ever. Each season tells a different story and meets us with different characters – played by amazing actors such as Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali. Great storytelling , complex and flawed characters, deep conversations, and authentic atmosphere are among the main strengths of the show.
Creators: James Manos Jr.
IMDB rating: 8.6
This time the serial killer is the hero… or well… Not so fast. What makes this show great is the complexity of the main character – Dexter. He is catching the bad guys during the day when helping the police force as forensic analyst, and he is catching the bad guys during the night when he becomes one of them – a serial killer with and irresistible urge to kill. The character evolves and changes through the series in a very natural way, which makes the show even greater. The plot is full of suspense, drama, family secrets, and even romance.
And guess what, 8 years after the big finale, there is a new season coming.
Creators: David Lynch and Mark Frost
This is not only my favorite TV show ever but also one of the most influential ones in the history of cinema. It aired in 1990 for two seasons and instantly gained million of fans all over the world. The show returned for a third season in 2017.
The story brings us in the small mountain town of Twin Peaks where FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper has just arrived to investigate the murder of a local teenager – Laura Palmer. The plot is full of strange and fascinating characters, mysterious and thrilling scenes, surrealism, drama and humor. You will instantly fall in love with the cast, or at least the setting itself. Adding to that a psychedelic vibe, philosophical motives and the music of Angelo Badalamenti , and you have a true masterpiece. This TV show is timeless, and much more, it has been inspiring cinematic creators and artists for years.
